Taking suo motu cognisance of the death of five innocent tribals in Kandhamal last Friday, the National Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the Centre as well as the Odisha government on the incident.
The commission has given two weeks’ time to submit the report. NHRC Secretary General SN Mohanty said in Bhubaneswar that under Section 19 of Protection of Human Rights Act, the Commission has sought reports from both the Union Home Ministry and Odisha government on the incident.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes PL Punia who visited yesterday Gumudumaha village and spoke to the family members and relatives of the victims, said said stern action must be taken against the wrongdoers.
He said the Commission would keep a watch on the actions taken by the state government. The visit of the NCSC chief came a day after the one by members of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes under its chairman Rameshwar Oraon.
