The National Human Rights Commission has called for a report from the District Collector of Chennai over the seizure of huge quantity of drugs-laced toffees in the city.
Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports about the confiscation of candies doped with banned intoxicants in Villupuram and dumping of drugs-laced candies in Kovilpatti area in southern Tamil Nadu, the Commission has sought the report in four weeks.
It comes in the wake of a school student falling seriously ill after consuming chocolates from a shop near his school at Tondiarpet in Chennai. The candies when tested in laboratories were found to be laced with marijuana.
Following the incident, the state health and food safety officials made intensive checks across the state leading to seizure of huge quantities of doped candies.
The NHRC has termed the menace of easy availability of the banned products as a serious threat to life and safety of younger generations.
The Income Tax authorities also during a recent raid in some of the go-downs in Red Hills on the outskirts of Chennai unearthed manufacturing units of banned tobacco products and massive tax evasion.
