A Danish woman has been fined for wearing a Niqab (veil) at a local market, in violation of a controversial new law. The ban, which took effect on August 1, prohibits full-face Islamic veils in public places.

A woman in North Zealand is the first to be charged with breach of the mask ban that came into force on Wednesday, reports Danish news paper  Politiken.

According to paper a 28-year-old woman is Friday afternoon as the first in Denmark aimed at the masking ban that entered into force on 1 August. This confirms North Zealand Police.

It’s the first such fine to be issued for violating the country’s contentious law banning full-face Islamic veils in public places, which came into effect on Wednesday.

She was also informed she would receive a fine of 1,000 kroner ($156/€134) in the mail.

The episode took place in the center of Hørsholm center where the woman with niqab came up to top with another woman by an escalator in the center. The women pushed to each other and uprorious scenes arise in which the Niqab, among other things, is being torn by one woman. The police told the ppaer that nothing indicates that the turmoil arose from the fact that one woman was wearing niqab.

The police do not consider that there was self-sufficiency against the niqab-bearing woman.

Chief of Police at North Zealand Police, David Borchersen, tells Politiken that the presence of police in Hørsholm Midtpunkt relates solely to the tumult between the two women, and nothing has to do with the fact that one with his attire contravened the law.

“We do not go there because we’ve been told that someone is wearing niqab. But when we get up and stop the tumult, one woman is wearing niqab and the other is not, “says David Borchersen.

David Borchersen reports that both women are being charged with violating the Order Order, while the woman in Niqab is also charged with violating section 134c of the Criminal Code.

“She is made aware that it is no longer legal to wear that clothing. Then she is told she must take the niqab off. She does not want to, and then the officers ask her to search elsewhere outside the public space, which she then chooses to do, “says David Borchersen.

Controversial law

The new law bans wearing a burqa, which covers a person’s entire face, or the niqab, which only shows the eyes, in public. The law also prohibits accessories that hide the face such as balaclavas, masks and false beards.

Critics see the law — approved by parliament in May — as encouraging anti-immigrant sentiments, pointing to the very small number of Muslim women in Denmark who actually wear full-face veils.
