Mumbai Police today denied having intercepted any conversation between Mumbai 1993 serial bomb blast prime suspect Mushtaq alias Tiger Memon and his mother. Memon is reported to have spoken to his mother Hanifa Memom and promised to avenge Yakub Memon’s hanging. Denying the reports, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dhananjay Kulkarni said that they have intercepted no such conversation and have no such transcript.

Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti too denied the report. The Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K P Bakshi said he has asked the Director General of Police (Maharashtra) and the Mumbai Police Commissioner to submit a report on this and made it clear that he is not privy to any such transcript.

The clarification came after an English daily reported that hours before Yakub’s hanging on July 30, Tiger Memon made a phone call to his mother at Mahim, in Mumbai and threatened to avenge his brother’s death while his mother reportedly pleaded with him not to perpetrate any further violence. The newspaper also said the conversation was intercepted by the Mumbai Police but the call could not be traced as it was made via Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
