Marathwada, which has witnessed unprecedented drought situation this year, heaved a sigh of relief yesterday when almost the entire region received good showers as a result of withdrawal of monsoon. Shrinivas Aundhkar, director of Nanded-based Mahatma Gandhi Mission for Astronomy and Space Technology, had predicted that return monsoon would bring showers to Marathwada.
He said, return monsoon was active due to low pressure clouds over the Bay of Bengal and that it would remain active for the next two-to-three days.
Parts of Marathwada — including Osmanabad, Nanded, Hingoli, Jalna, Parbhani — received a fair amount of rain. Nanded received heavy rain for more than an hour in the evening. Hingoli, Parbhani and Osmanabad received rain for the entire day while Nanded witnessed showers till late evening.
According to K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director, IMDthe, a fresh spell of rainfall in Marathwada and Nagpur in the last 24 hours may be able to compensate for water deficiency in the region. In the last 24 hours, Madhya Maharashtra received over 250 mm of rainfall, which is said to be good for crops. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, rains or thundershowers may continue throughout the region for three to four days.
