All activities came to a grinding halt and life has been thrown out of gear as the indefinite Total Bandh came to effect from early this morning in Champhai District. The total bandh has been imposed by the influential Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) Headquarters, Champhai in protest against the insufficient doctors at the District Hospital.
The MZP Headquarters has been demanding posting of sufficient doctors at the District Hospital since February this year.
No untoward incident has happened till the filing of this report. The bandh is in progress with calm albeit under strict vigilance from the bandh volunteers. All shops and business establishments were shuttered down and the roads look deserted as no vehicles were seen plying on the road.
The MZP is demanding posting of Surgeon, Paediatrician, Jail Doctor and filling up of other vacant posts. The total bandh is also being supported by other civil society organisations (CSOs) of Champhai District.
The Mizoram Government is yet to reach out to the MZP.
