The India Meteorological Department, IMD has maintained its earlier forecast of good rainfall this year in the country. In its second long range forecast, the IMD has predicted that the southwest monsoon rainfall will be more than the normal in 2016. Briefing reporters in New Delhi today, Director General of IMD, L S Rathore said the monsoon seasonal rainfall is likely to be 106 per cent of the long period average.
Mr Rathore said, the region-wise distribution of rainfall will also be good. He said, North-West India is likely to receive 108 per cent rainfall while Central India and southern peninsula are expected to receive 113 per cent rainfall.The North-Eastern Region is likely to get 94 per cent of rainfall which is below normal.
The country had received deficient rainfall in the last two consecutive years. He said, the conditions are favourable for onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala during next four to five days.However, the normal onset date for monsoon in the region is 1st of June.
