The Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly today withdrew a no-confidence motion that it had moved against the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance Government headed by chief minister Mukul Sangma.
All the Opposition members who spoke admitted that the real intention of their no-confidence motion was not to topple the government, as with just 14 members, they did not have the requisite strength in a house of sixty. They said their main intention was to bring to the notice of the government several areas of lapses.
Opposing the no-confidence motion, chief minister Mukul Sangma highlighted about several achievements of his government. He said the financial health of the state was robust despite certain constraints, especially following the interim ban on coal mining imposed by the National Green Tribunal .
