(Last Updated On: 01/07/2016)

Sonu, a 12-year-old boy who was kidnapped from outside his house in east Delhi in 2010 and taken to Bangladesh, was Thursday brought back from Dhaka and reunited with his parents following intervention by the MEA.

Sonu was found in a child rehabilitation centre in Jessore in Bangladesh and was handed over to the Indian high commission in Dhaka three days back by the local authorities following a court order.

The boy, accompanied by his parents, met external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and thanked her. “From Geeta to Gurpreet, and now to Sonu! EAM @Sushma-Swaraj welcomes the young boy Sonu home from Bangladesh,” MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted along with a photograph of Ms Swaraj welcoming Sonu.

According to news agency bureau, a man from Jessore had recently contacted Sonu’s parents in India and given details of his whereabouts following which his family approached the MEA for help. “I have found my son and I am very happy now. I would like to thank Sushma Swaraj ji,”

Sonu’s father Mehboob said. Swaraj had personally instructed officials to reunite Sonu with his parents.
