Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad of Gujarat police today claimed to have arrested Farooq Bhana, one of the main conspirator of 2002 Sabarmati Express train burning case in Godhra.Accused Farooq Bhana was wanted ever since the incident of burning of Sabarmati Express train in which 59 Kar-Sevaks returning from Ayodhya were burnt alive in S6 coach of the train. Farooq Bhana, who had been evading arrest ever since his name surfaced in police investigations, was arrested from Kalol toll Naka in Panchmahal district.
According to police charge sheet in the case, the main accused Farooq Bhana had hold a meeting of about 20 people in a private guest house in Godhra on 27th February 2002 to plan the mob attack on the train on same day. The mob set fire several coaches of the train near Godhra station.
Total 59 people were charred to death in this gruesome carnage in which majority was women and children returning back from Ayodhya. This incident had sparked wide spread violence in Gujarat which had also claimed many lives. More than 30 people have already been convicted for the Godhra train carnage case.
A former councillor of Godhra Municipality, Farooq Bhana was among six people who were listed as absconders. Farooq Bhana was the fourth accused arrested in this case during the last one year. Out of 31 accused convicted in this case, 11 had got capital punishment while 20 had been sent for life imprisonment.
