Manipur Government has sought from the Centre a financial assistance of Rs 500 crore for rehabilitation of earthquake victims and reconstruction of damaged properties. State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has written letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.
As an immediate relief measure, state government is going to release funds to district administrations to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore each for Senapati, Tamenglong and Imphal West Districts and Rs 50 lakh each for the other districts affected by the high intensity tremor on the fourth of this month.
Six persons had died and more than 100 got injured in the jolt. Later, three more persons died in quake related incidences. Many public buildings including some key government office buildings like the Ministers’ Block at the State Civil Secretariat and two main markets of Khwairamband Bazar at the heart of state capital Imphal got partially damaged.
Many government buildings in Tamenglong District, the epicentre of the tremor also suffered irreparable damages. Some market complexes in Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur Districts got either partially or severely damaged in the tremor. Many private buildings were also either partially or completely destroyed by the tremor and about 1400 people were rendered homeless mostly in Tamenglong and Senapati hill districts of the state.
