In Sri Lanka, former President Maithripala Sirisena has said that he will contest next presidential elections from Sri Lanka freedom Party (SLFP). The Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in September 2024. Speaking to reporters in Colombo, the former president apologised to the victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attack which had taken place during his tenure.

Mr. Sirisena added that the Supreme Court had not said that he had committed an offence but held him accountable for the offences committed by officers appointed by him as the President. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka ruled that Mr. Sirisena led government had failed to prevent the tragedy despite having credible information. Accordingly, he was ordered to pay a compensation of 100 million (10 crore) Sri Lankan rupees to the victims.
