Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of 24th and last Jain Tirthankar Bhagwan Mahavir is being celebrated across the country today. Mahavir Jayanti is considered to be one of the most auspicious events for Jain people and holds a lot of importance in their religious life. Devotees of Lord Mahavir and his followers celebrate this festival by chanting prayers, offering Prasad and participating in chariot processions.

President and Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted the people on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. In his message, President Pranab Mukherjee said that Bhagwan Mahavira’s philosophy of Ahimsa, truth, compassion and non-violence are of increasing relevance in today’s world.

He appealed to the people to imbibe his teaching of right faith, knowledge and conduct and unite and build a society free from violence, terrorism and exploitation.

Greeting the people, Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari said that through his teachings of non-violence and compassion, Bhagwan Mahavir showed an enlightened path for harmony and progress of humanity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also greeted the people on the occasion. In a tweet, Mr Modi recalled the noble teachings of Lord Mahavir, which continue to guide generations.
