Lockdown is being re-imposed in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad region in Maharashtra. Making the announcement, Pune Divisional Commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar informed that lockdown will come into effect from 13th of this month and will be valid till 23rd of this month. In another development, the Thane Municipal Corporation too has extended the lockdown till 19th of this month.

With barely 10 days into the second phase of “Mission Begin Again” where the State Government allowed reopening of hotels with 33 per cent occupancy, lockdown is being reimposed in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas. Pune Divisional Commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar said, the decision was taken after a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other senior government officials today. Mr Pawar is also the Guardian Minister of Pune.

Mr Mhaisekar said, it has been decided to ramp up testing capacity in the wake of rise in number of cases in these cities. The lockdown will be valid in jurisdiction of Police Commissioners of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, cantonment and rural areas.

Pune Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad said, the lockdown will be in two phases, i.e between 13th to 18th July medical shops, dairies & hospitals will be allowed to remain open.

In second phase from 19-23rd July, apart from medical stores, dairies, hospitals, essential services will also be allowed. In Thane city too, the lockdown which was to end on 12th of this month has been extended for seven more days till 19th of July. After Mumbai, Thane and Pune have seen relentless increase in COVID-19 cases in last few days.
