AMN / MUMBAI
Maratha community will now get reservation in jobs and educational institutions under a new category called SEBC (Socially and Economically Backward). Addressing a press conference after the customary tea party, a day before the winter session of Maharashtra Legislature in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the Marathas will get reservation from an independent quota and this will not affect the reservations given to the Other Backward Class (OBC).
The Chief Minister added that the State Commission for Backward Class in its report submitted recently, said that extra-ordinary and exceptional circumstances prevail among the Marathas, which makes them eligible to reap the benefits of reservation. He further said that one of the recommendations of the commission in its report says that Marathas are socially and educationally backward class.
A cabinet meeting was chaired by Mr Fadnavis today which has accepted the report submitted by the Commission chairman Justice (retired) M G Gaikwad, who handed over the report to state Chief Secretary D K Jain on 15th of this month.
The Chief Minister said, a sub-committee of the state cabinet has been formed which will look into all the other aspects to give reservation to the Marathas.
Speaking on the drought situation in the state, he said, the state government has sent a proposal to the Centre seeking 7500 crore rupees.
