Maharashtra Election Commission has cancelled the registration of 191 local political parties for failure to submit Income Tax returns and audited accounts. Prominent among these political are Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen – AIMIM and RPI-Khobragade faction.

The decision is likely to cause a huge blow to Owaisi-led AIMIM that was eyeing to make strong inroads in Brihanmumbai Municipal Elections, scheduled to be held in 2017. AIMIM had bagged an impressive second position in Aurangabad municipal elections while also managing to open its account in Kalyan-Dombivali civic polls that were held recently.

State Election Commissioner J S Saharia has informed that despite sending reminders, these parties failed to submit the necessary documents. He said the party members will now have to contest as independents or the parties will have to file for fresh registration.
