Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today expressed concern over several industries sacking workers at a time when the government is allowing resumption of business activities in the state.

Mr Thackeray made the remarks as he launched the state government’s MahaJobs portal that aims to make available job opportunities to the ‘sons of the soil’ or domiciled persons.

Besides, with several ongoing infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) witnessing delays due to lack of labourers owing to covid 19 pandemic, the Maharashtra government’s skill development ministry is also conducting an online job fair this week starting today.

While launching the MahaJobs portal today, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said that migrant workers, who went to their native states due to the lockdown, have started coming back to the state slowly after the government allowed resumption of business activities.

However, the chief minister noted that in such a situation several industries slashing salaries of workers or sacking them is not right.

He said this issue needs to be discussed with industrialists as the state government is trying to resolve difficulties that they are facing.

Attending the portal launch via video conferencing, state Industries Minister Subhash Desai said 17 sectors for which job seekers can apply through the portal include engineering, logistic, textile and pharmaceutical.

He said skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled candidates can apply for jobs by uploading their details on the portal, which can be accessed by employers/industries also.

On the other hand, in the absence of labourers, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is implementing large infrastructure projects, is facing the challenge of project delays of more than 5-6 months.

Therefore, the state’s ministry of skill development is also conducting ‘Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Online Job Fair” in two phases starting today till 12th July to fill the vacancy.

First phase of the job fair is being conducted in the Thane region starting today till 8th July while the second phase will be conducted in Mumbai city and suburbs between July 8 and 12.
