Sri Lanka government has decided to release all 104 Indian fishermen in its custody. These fishermen were arrested by the country’s navy on charges of trespassing and poaching in it’s territorial waters.

The decision to release the fishermen was earlier expected to be announced on the occasion of the Thai Pongal festival, but according to senior officials in Fisheries Department of Sri Lanka, the fishermen will be produced in magistrate’s court in Jaffna on Monday when the formal orders of their release will be issued.

Meanwhile, 8 Indian fishermen who were released by a Sri Lankan court last week were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard by Sri Lankan Navy today. These fishermen were caught and handed over to police by Jaffna fishermen after the two groups clashed on the seas between the two countries.
