Retired Lieutenant General and a key architect of India’s victory in 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, Jacob-Farj-Rafael “JFR” Jacob passed away in Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi today.

Jacob, then a Major General also served as the Chief of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command. During his 36-year career in the army, he also fought in World War II and the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965.

JFR Jacob later served as the Governor of Goa and Punjab.

The Prime Minister has expressed grief on the passing away of Lieutenant General JFR Jacob. In a tweet, Mr Narendra Modi said, India will always remain grateful to the General for his impeccable service to the nation at the most crucial moments. Mr Modi said, he had a memorable interaction when General Jacob presented his autobiography to him.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has also expressed her condolences on the demise of Lt. General Jacob. In her message, Mrs Gandhi said the nation is proud of his life, work and service to the nation as a soldier and patriot.
