Nearly 8,000 people were detained by police during protests that turned violent last week in Kazakhstan. The incident marked the nation as worst unrest region since it gained independence 30 years ago. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev described the unrest ‘terrorist aggression’ against the mineral-rich Central Asian nation of 19 million population. He also dismissed reports that authorities targeted peaceful demonstrators as disinformation.
