army 2Two militants were killed in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district today. The Army, CRPF and J&K Police on the basis of a tip off about the presence of some militants cordoned off the Malwari hamlet in Newa area early today morning. As the forces intensified the cordon-and-search operation, the hiding militants opened fire triggering off an encounter. AIR correspondent reports that the anti militancy operation has concluded.

Defence spokesman told media that two militants believed to be local cadres of Lashkar e Tayyeba were killed in the encounter. Two policemen were reported to have sustained injuries in the operation. Reports said that youth of Newa and adjacent villages took to streets and resorted to stone pelting on security forces apparently to help trapped militants escape from the area.

Meanwhile, two Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen were yesterday arrested from Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. A store of ammunition including grenades, Rocket Projectile Gun rounds, landmines and IEDs, was recovered from the arrested workers.
