Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has written a letter today to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the immediate release of 96 fishermen from the state lodged in Lankan jail. She requested the Prime Minister to take diplomatic measures to ensure the release of 82 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka.

There is deep sense of frustration and anger among the fishermen community of Tamil Nadu because of continued detention of fishermen.
Permanent solution for the fishermen problem can be brought out only by securing the fishing rights in traditional areas near Kachatheevu and Palk Bay. The local fishermen are urging the Central government to find a lasting and permanent solution to the issue. In the forthcoming Assembly elections the fishermen problem will be an emotive issue in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.
