A powerful typhoon hurtled toward Japan’s mainland today after injuring dozens en route on southern islands. Typhoon Trami has already sparked travel disruption in Japan, with bullet train services in the west suspended and almost 1,000 flights cancelled due to the closure of a key airport hub.

Weather officials have warned that fierce winds and torrential rain could trigger landslides and floods. According to official sources in Kagoshima, several houses have been flooded or damaged and 45 people sustained injuries. No death has been reported, so far.

Authorities have issued evacuation advisories to some 3 lakh 49,000 residents, while electricity was cut to more than 3 lakh houses.
Trami is the latest in a series of extreme natural events in Japan, which has suffered typhoons, flooding, earthquakes and heat waves in recent months, claiming scores of lives and causing damage.
