Typhoon Mindulle made landfall near Tateyama City in Chiba Prefecture south of Tokyo today. Officials at the Japan Meteorological Agency say the storm is moving northward, packing winds up to 108 kilometers per hour near its center.

Twelve people were injured as windstorms and torrential rain continued to batter the Kanto and Tokai regions.

Weather officials say an extremely heavy downpour of about 100 millimeters per hour was observed in some areas of Tokyo and Saitama around noon. The officials warn of a high risk of mudslides in southern Kanto including Tokyo and neighboring prefectures as well as Shizuoka Prefecture.

In Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, 4 rivers have overflowed their banks. More than 500 flights have been canceled. Train services have also been disrupted.

Officials say the storm will likely head for northern Japan later today. They say it could bring more than 50 millimeters of rain per hour this evening to the Kanto and Tokai regions and northern Japan.
