Japan today lifted sanctions on Iran, falling in line with major world powers. This follows the United Nations atomic energy agency confirming last Saturday that Tehran has fully taken steps to curb its disputed nuclear programme.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga made the announcement at a regular news conference. Tokyo imported around 10% of Iran’s oil before introducing sanctions against Tehran. After the sanctions, this share fell to 5% and then reduced even further.
