Contentious issues should be debated in a civilized manner

In a strong message, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today condemned the act of vandalism as an instrument to convey views.

He criticised those indulging in acts of vandalism as a method of protest.

Terming it as an extremely disturbing trend, the Finance Minister said contentious issues should be discussed debated in a civilized manner.

Referring to some sensitive statements made by BJP leaders recently, the Finance Minister said Party President Amit Shah has strongly taken up the issue with those concerned.

Speaking to media in New Delhi, Mr Jaitley said in the past few days, some people have resorted to violence which is extremely disturbing.

He said everyone should be careful on statements on sensitive issues like relationship between communities.

He said BJP President has very strongly taken it up with the people those who have given controversial statements. Mr Jaitely said Prime Minister also conveyed his views on this issue.

He, however, said anybody in BJP not resorted to such methods and party spokespersons have conducted themselves in right spirit.

Mr Jaitley said people indulging in vandalism should be strongly criticised.

He said people should raise level of debate rather than use vandalism as there are divergent views and traditionally there is civility in expressing these views.

Meanwhile Congress today said NDA government should take tangible action against elements and forces responsible for vandalism and rising intolerance in the country.

Briefing reporters in New Delhi, party spokesperson Anand Sharma said party is not satisfied with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s statement condemning hooliganism and vandalism.

He said NDA government must not only condemn such acts, but also take concrete action.

Mr Sharma said Congress will take initiative in bringing together all secular, democratic and progressive forces in the backdrop of continued assault on institutions.
