Iran Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has agreed to pardon about 50,000 prisoners on the occasion of the 40th victory anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, Iranian Judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani announced.

The Iranian Judiciary Chief Amoli Larijani today announced that 50,000 convicts will receive pardons from Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani, the Iranian Judiciary Chief, was quoted by Iranian Media as saying at a meeting with the country’s senior judicial authorities on Monday that 50,000 convicts will be pardoned or their sentences reduced on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.
He went on to highlight that “The Supreme Leader agreed with the basic conditions of granting amnesty to the prisoners. According to some estimates, about 50,000 people are subject o this amnesty.’
Many of them will be released soon while some others will be subject to commutation. Some may be released 2 months or 6 months later, he added.
The Ayatollah said that granting amnesty to prisoners on various occasions has a long history in Iran which shows the strength of the system in dealing with offenders.
He said this is a manifestation of the affection of the Islamic system and proves the system is so strong that it can easily deal with any threats offenders may pose.
The 10-day period from Imam Khomeini’s return to Tehran from exhile on February 1, 1979 until the revolution’s victory on February 11 is celebrated in Iran annually and is dubbed as the Ten-Day Fajr (Dawn).
The tradition is in line with implementing Paragraph 11 of Article 110 of Iran’s Constitution in a bid to reduce the adverse effects of imprisonment on the families of convicts and facilitate the process of the convicts’ rehabilitation.
