Iran has voiced displeasure over Bangladesh’s response to the US-Israeli war on Iran, saying Dhaka failed to clearly condemn the “aggressive forces” behind the conflict, even as Tehran approved safe passage for six Bangladesh-bound fuel vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

At a press conference at the Iranian Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday, ambassador Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi said Tehran was “not satisfied” with Bangladesh’s official statement. “Iran is hurt by the statement of the Bangladesh government on the war,” he said, adding that it “should have been clearer”.

Calling Bangladesh a “friend” and a Muslim country, the envoy said Iran had expected stronger support. He said Bangladesh, as a UN and OIC member, could have condemned the forces attacking Iran. Referring to ties between the two countries, he said, “Bangladesh is a friend and a Muslim country, and its people are like brothers.”

The ambassador, however, announced that Iran’s Security Council had approved safe passage for six Bangladesh fuel-carrying ships waiting to cross Hormuz. He said ship numbers and specifications had been shared with Tehran and expressed hope the vessels would cross soon. “Iran does not want Bangladeshis to face any hardships and will provide all necessary assistance for transporting fuel through Hormuz,” he said.

Bangladesh’s Energy Division said no official letter had yet been received, though developments appeared positive.

The six vessels include five LNG cargoes from Qatar and one crude oil shipment from Saudi Arabia. Nearly 5 lakh tonnes of LNG and around 79,000 tonnes of crude are involved. Bangladesh had earlier approached Iran for help as regional tensions cast uncertainty over shipments through one of the world’s most critical energy routes.
