The Indian Railways has planned to double originating train capacity in 48 major cities by 2030 to address rapidly growing travel demand. These cities include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Patna, Bhopal and Puri. The Railway Ministry said, this will help in meeting the traffic requirement progressively over the years.

Chairman of the Railway Board Satish Kumar has written a letter to General Managers of all Zonal Railways and asked them to increase train handling capacity across their divisions. They have been asked to identify and create new terminals in and around the urban area. It will be done for both suburban and non-suburban traffic, keeping in view the distinct requirements of both segments.
