New Army Chief General Bipin Rawat today said that India wants to maintain peace and tranquility at the border but will not shy away from using its power in any form if required. General Rawat said, the Army is duty bound to maintain the security and sanctity of the borders, assist the government in the maintenance of internal law and order and also provide succour during any disaster.

He was speaking to media, after inspecting a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the lawns of South Block in New Delhi.

Gen Rawat also sent across a message to all ranks, saying every soldier in the army counts irrespective of the arms and service he belongs to because it is his contribution that makes the army efficient and strong.

On a query on supercession of officers during his selection as the Chief of the Army, General Rawat said, it was a government decision and the superseded officers have worked with him and will continue to do so in the interest of Army. He said, he accepted the government’s decision to appoint him as the chief with all humility. General Rawat took charge as the new Army Chief yesterday from General Dalbir Singh.
