Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that a trilateral accord between India-Iran and Afghanistan on transportation and transit of commodities could be a historical opportunity. Modi who is on a two day visit to Iran said: ‘Reinforcing India-Iran economic cooperation would serve the interests of the two nations.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Modi reiterated that the agreement would create new relations aimed at enhancing ties among the three countries.
Praising the leadership of Iran for far-sighted diplomacy, Modi said India has always stood by Iran through the difficult times.
He also appreciated President Rouhani for his warm and friendly hospitality, adding that Iranian attractive history and rich Persian heritage have always lured people across the globe for many years.
Touching upon his meeting with President Rouhani, he added current regional and international developments were discussed during the meeting.
‘India and Iran play pivotal roles in enhancing regional peace and tranquility,’ he said.
Modi reiterated that the two sides also have agreed to reinforce cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts, transit of narcotics and cyber crimes.
‘New Delhi and Tehran also have agreed to facilitate collaboration of two countries’ defensive and security organizations in marine security in the region,’ he added.
PM Modi said India and Iran have common concerns about terrorism and extremism in the region. The Indian premier also extended invitation to President Rouhani for visit to India in near future.
Modi, leading a high-ranking political, economic and cultural delegation, arrived in Tehran on Sunday for an official two-day visit to Iran to discuss ways to promote bilateral ties between the two countries.
President Hassan Rouhani said relations between Iran and India today can benefit both nations and also the entire region.

Welcoming Modi, Rouhani said his trip to Iran is taking place at post sanctions and post JCPOA era that will prepare the ground for further economic cooperation.
Today, the two sides are determined to enhance bilateral relations from merely trade ties into comprehensive economic ones, said President Rouhani.
President Rouhani and Modi inked 12 documents on cooperation in different fields here on Monday.
