Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Malaysia today on a two day official visit where he was accorded a grand welcome. Addressing the Indian diaspora at an event in Kuala Lumpur, Mr Modi highlighted the deep personal and people-to-people ties between India and Malaysia. He described Indian diaspora as a living bridge connecting the hearts of the two nations.

Recalling his longstanding friendship with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister said India and Malaysia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024, adding that both countries now walk hand in hand and celebrate each other’s success. Mr Modi added, over 100 Indian IT companies are operating in Malaysia, generating thousands of jobs. He announced that India’s digital payment platform UPI will be launched in Malaysia soon.

Highlighting key diaspora-focused initiatives, Mr Modi said the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card facility has been extended up to the sixth generation. The Thiruvalluvar Scholarship will be introduced for students studying in India, and a new Indian consulate will be opened in Malaysia, he added. Prime Minister also praised diaspora for contributing to the vision of a prosperous Malaysia and a developed India.

During the visit, the two sides will review the entire gamut of bilateral ties, with a focus on assessing the implementation of decisions taken after the elevation of ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Malaysia is also a key partner for India under its Act East Policy, giving the visit and added strategic significance.
