A Hong Kong court today found 14 pro-democracy activists guilty of conspiracy to subvert state power while acquitting two others, in a landmark national security case.
According to media reports, in 2021, 47 protesters and activists were charged under the national security law with conspiracy to commit subversion. Meanwhile, 16 of them maintained their innocence throughout the trial, and the remaining 31 pleaded guilty, hoping for more lenient sentences.
It said those found guilty could face three years to life in jail. The sentencing is expected later this year. Most of the defendants have been in jail since they were first brought to court in March 2021.
