Meerut /
A group of the Hindu Yuva Vahini founded by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday barged into a house and allegedly roughed up a Muslim man and a woman belonging to another faith after they were found together.
Yogi Adityanath had recently instructed police not to harass “innocent” couples after some unsavoury incidents involving anti-Romeo squads.
Police said the youth brigade created a ruckus after some local residents informed them that the man had called the woman to his friend’s rented accommodation. The activists told police that the two were allegedly found in an objectionable position.
While the woman was released after warning, the man, who is a resident of Muzaffarnagar, was booked on charges of obscenity, they said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Meerut J Ravinder Goud told reporters that the girl’s parents were called she was sent back home. Her parents objected to the friendship between the couple following which the police took action against the boy. The “Muslim boy” was booked under Section 294 (obscene act in public places) of the Indian Penal Code and produced before a court, SSP Goud added.
On Friday, HYV activists had forced police to stop prayer at a church in UP’s Maharajganj district alleging that people were being forced to convert their religion.
After coming to power, Adityanath had assured that Anti-Romeo Squads formed by the government would not harass couples..
