Story image for godse from Times of IndiaRight wing Hindu organisations today organised a program to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse’s death anniversary as ‘Shaurya Diwas’ in Panvel near Mumbai.

Hindu Mahasabha celebrates Godse’s death anniversary the November 15th as ‘Shaurya Divas’ throughout Maharashtra.

Members of Sanatan Sanstha, which had hit the headlines for the murder of rationalist Govind Pansare, also participated in the ceremony to eulogise Godse.

The Hindu Mahasabha last year declared plans to build temples for Godse. Godse was hanged on November 15, 1949 following his conviction for killing ‘Father of the Nation’.

In Uttar Pradesh leaders of a Hindu group launched a website www.nathuramgodse.in at an event in Meerut today to commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse.

Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) and its frontal organisation Vishwa Hindu Peeth also performed a yagna at the Mahasabha office at Sharda road on the occasion. ABHM’s national general secretary Munna Kumar Sharma, patron Ashok Sharma, Viswa Hindu Peeth’s national president Acharya Madanji, Nathuram Godse Brigade president Swami Omji, Mahasabha’s city president Bharat Rajput, district president Abhishek Aggarwal and other leaders and activists offered ‘ahuti’ in the yagna in the presence of police officials.

“The objective of the website is to make people aware about Godse and the facts behind assassination of Gandhi.” said Acharya Madanji, who launched the website.

“Godse was not a criminal”, said Ashok Sharma, emphasising that people must know his statement recorded in the court after his arrest on charges of assassinating Gandhi . “He sacrificed his life at the age of 39 and we call him a criminal”, he said.

On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi fell to his assassin Nathuram Vinayak Godse’s bullets during an evening prayer ceremony at Birla House in Delhi. Perched atop a gate of Birla House, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru announced to the world the “light has gone out of our lives”.

Rejecting the Congress Party’s charge that it was involved in programmes celebrating Nathuram Godse’s 66th death anniversary, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday said it has nothing to do with such right-wing organisations.

“Some organisations are carrying out programmes in the name of Godse, we condemn that, and in fact, we have nothing to do with any of these organisations,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.
