Suspends His sentence in hit & run case
The Bombay High Court today suspended the 5-year sentence of actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case and granted him bail pending his appeal against conviction. Justice Abhay Thipsay, who had on Wednesday granted him an interim bail for two days, heard the appeal against his conviction and his plea for bail today. The term of interim bail was to expire today. Justice Thipsay said, Salman has been on bail for a long time and his liberty was not curtailed. He said, normally, in such cases, the appeal is admitted and an accused is granted bail. He asked the defence to follow the procedure and asked Salman to surrender and apply for a fresh bail bond of Rs 30,000 at the session court.
The High Court had granted 48-hour interim bail to the actor, hours after he was convicted and sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by the trial court on the ground that he had not been supplied with a detailed order explaining the reasons for his conviction. The trial court had found Salman guilty of running over the pavement in front of the American Express bakery in suburban Bandra with his Toyota Land Cruiser on 28 September, 2002, killing one person and injuring four others sleeping on the pavement. Salman did not turn up at the High Court when his appeal came up for hearing today.
