Most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are experiencing heavy rain since Monday morning. In Chennai, most of the roads are under water, leaving the traffic into a snarl.

Fallen trees on the roads caused many traffic diversions leading to congestion in many parts. So far, four people in the region have lost their lives due to falling of walls. Many more houses got damaged.

The Meteorology Department has predicted more rain in the offing as the Deep Depression is making a landfall near Cuddalore Monday afternoon.

Rain is persistent in most of the coastal districts including Chennai under the impact of the deep depression, leading to water logging in most of the urban areas and low lying villages.

All the reservoirs catering to the drinking water needs of Chennai are receiving copious rain. Diwali shoppers and office goers found the going very tough on Monday.

The Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre in Chennai, Mr SR Ramanan said rain would increase in the north interior districts after the landfall of the depression.

Meanwhile, the deep depression in Bay Bengal off Puducherry is unlikely to intensify into a cyclone, as per the latest update from Met Office.
But rains continue to lash the Union Territory. 133 mm rainfall has reported in the last 24 hours alone.

Though the depression might not develop into a cyclone, Heavy rains and winds reaching upto 65 km per hour is expected when the depression hit the coast.
It might touch the land near Puducherry in the afternoon. Strong winds coupled with rain have disrupted normal life in the Union Territory.

Meanwhile Puducherry administration has put Departments of Revenue and Disaster Management on high alert to meet any eventuality.

Schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal remain closed owing to heavy rains. Chief Minister N Rangasamy today visited affected areas to take stock of the official preparedness to meet the challenge.
