Heavy rain continues in southern and central parts of Kerala as Cyclonic Storm ‘OCKHI’ has intensified. The Cyclone Ockhi that was formed this morning off the coast of Kanyakumari this morning is likely to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm.
It was observed to be lying 120 kilometres West South West of Kanyakumari coast and 180 kilometres South-South-West of Thiruvananthapuram this afternoon.
The system is moving towards the Lakshadweep Islands at a speed of about 20 kilometres per hour.
Weather officials have said, the southern regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala would experience widespread rain with the possibility of heavy rain at isolated places.
They have warned that gale wind may be experienced in the region with its speed reaching 65 to 75 kilometres per hour gusting up to 85 kilometres per hour.
Sea conditions would be rough and fishermen in the area have been asked to stay away from the sea for the next 24 hours. Under the influence of the Cyclone Ockhi, the Lakshadweep Islands are expected to witness storm surges from tonight.
