Iran’s former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani will be buried at Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum in Beheshte Zahra cemetery today. This was stated by his son Mohsen Hashemi in Tehran yesterday. He said funerals will be held at Tehran University and the body will be taken to the mausoleum.

Mr Rafsanjani, President from 1989 to 1997, died of a heart attack on Sunday at the age of 82. Late Rafsanjani was a key supporter of President Hassan Rouhani and had backed Iran’s landmark deal with world powers over its nuclear programme. Tributes and condolences have come from around the world.

The US State Department described Mr Rafsanjani as a prominent figure in Iranian history. Syrian President Bashar Assad in his condolence said that Rafsanjani was known for his courageous and frank stances and his hard work for the sake of the dignity and freedom of the Iranian people.
