Mumbai’s Special Court, while hearing the Enforcement Directorate’s application seeking Khan’s remand adjourned the hearing till Thursday after asking the ED to do some more homework in the case. Special Principal Judge M L Tahiliyani slammed the ED officials saying they were unable to frame specific charges against Hasan Ali. On his part, however, Hasan Ali has pleaded innocent before the court.
“You have not been able to make any case and you want me to hear you. If you want to do some homework, you can take time,” Principal Sessions Court Judge M L Tahaliyani sternly told the ED while adjourning the hearing.
Hasan Ali Khan, also a real estate consultant was arrested from Mumbai on Monday midnight under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The ED arrested Khan after prolonged searches at his premises in Pune and in Mumbai accompanied by sustained interrogation.
Khan is accused of amassing 8 billion US dollars in the Zurich branch of UBS. He is also accused of concealing his income and tax evasion since 1999, amounting to more than Rs 40,000 crore. Khan however claimed that he has not done anything wrong and dismissed reports of having stashed huge amounts in Swiss banks.
Taking note of reports of Khan’s alleged links with arms dealers and people associated with terror activities, the Supreme Court had on Tuesday asked the Centre to consider whether he could be booked under the anti-terror law.
