In Haryana, the number of candidates having a criminal background has increased this time as compared to the figure of the 2014 assembly elections.

As per declaration given by candidates in their affidavits, about 10 per cent candidates have a criminal background, whereas the figure was 7 per cent in the last assembly election.

According to a report released by the ‘Association for democratic reforms’ ADR, a total of 117 candidates have declared criminal cases against them. Out of these, 70 candidates are facing serious criminal charges.

Highest 13 candidates of congress have declared criminal cases against them, while 3 candidates having criminal background are in the fray on BJP ticket.

BSP has the highest candidates having serious criminal background. Five candidates are facing charges of committing a crime against women, 5 are facing charges of attempt to Murder while 11 have been convicted by competent courts.

Out of 90 assembly seats, 15 constituencies are such where 3 or more candidates have declared criminal cases against them.
