Following stiff resistance from some states on the recent notification putting restrictions on cattle slaughter, the government Tuesady said that it could revisit some issues.
Talking to mediapersons here, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said the livestock markets rules were notified with the larger intent of preventing cruelty to animals.
The Minister clarified that the rules were notified against the backdrop of some observations made by the Supreme Court and a Parliamentary committee on preventing cruelty to animals and breaking nexus in markets, including smuggling.
He said that later some issues were raised in different quarters and added that “these issues will be duly examined by the Government.’ West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that her government would not abide by the recent notification of the Union government imposing restrictions on cattle slaughter. She described the notification as a “deliberate attempt to encroach upon the State power”, and termed it “unconstitutional.
