Government has embarked on an ambitious programme to ensure 100 per cent electrification of Railways grid in the next five years.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said, the step will help reduce carbon emissions and supplement the efforts to fight climate change. Mr Goyal was speaking in New Delhi today after he was conferred with Carnot Prize by a US-based Centre for Energy Policy.

The award recognizes role of exceptional leaders in advancing mission of cultivating energy policy innovation. Mr Goyal also said that his Ministry has conceptualized solar installations on Railways land to lower emissions as well as increase revenue.

The Minister stated that India aims to lead the world in fight against climate change. He added that India’s contributions to this end is testament to the country’s cultural belief that each element of the nature must be protected and preserved for coming generations.
