Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has rejected conditions put forth by Congress for the passage of Goods and Services Tax Bill, saying the party’s pre-conditions were just an after thought. Speaking at a press conference on restructuring Public Sector banks in New Delhi, Mr Jaitley said it is not prudent politics to put pre-conditions on matter of Centre-State fiscal relations.

The minister said in 2013, the Standing Committee on GST had unanimously opposed disputes resolution mechanism which as Finance Minister Mr. P Chidambaram accepted. On the issue of WPI Inflation, which is at negative zone of minus 4.05 percent, Mr Jaitley said it is a positive sign and speaks of the stability of the economy of the country. Mr Jaitley added that, manufacturing and the indirect tax collection figures are very encouraging. Defending the government stand on One Rank One Pension, Mr Jaitley said the government is committed to OROP principle and only arithmetic translation is being worked out.
