Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today said the government has recently launched the Green Highways (plantation, transplantation, beautification and maintenance) policy 2015 to develop eco friendly National Highways in the country. Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Mr Gadkari said the policy highlights to arrest soil erosion at the embankment slopes and to prevent glare from the headlight of incoming vehicles.

He said his ministry is taking several steps to reduce the number of road accidents occurring in the country. Mr Gadkari said land for plantations along highways has not been acquired separately. The minister informed the Indian Highways Management Company limited has been assigned the job of empanelment of planting agencies and monitoring of plantations. He said NHAI will act as fund manager for the green highways fund.
