General Secretary of CPI Atul Kumar Anjaan Passes Away After Prolonged Illness

The General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, Atul Kumar Anjaan passed away after prolonged illness in Lucknow today morning at the age of 69. He was battling advanced-stage cancer and was admitted in a private hospital last month. His last rights will be performed at Bhaisa Kund in Lucknow this afternoon.

He breathed his last in the hospital at Lucknow around 3.40 A.M.  today (3rd May, 2024).  He was ill for quite some time and under treatment. He was 70 years old.

His father Dr. A.P. Singh was a veteran freedom fighter who took part in actions of HSRA (Hindustan Socialist Republican Association), for which he served a long sentence in the British jail.

In his early 20s, Anjaan got elected as the President of National College Students Union. Popular for voicing concerns of students, Anjaan also won the presidency of Lucknow University Students’ Union for four consecutive terms. A gifted orator in half-a-dozen languages, Anjaan joined the Communist Party of India during his university days.

He was one of the main leaders of the famous Police-PAC revolt of U.P. Anjaan spent four years and nine months in jail during his political journey.  Due to his political and ideological conviction and capacity to lead students’ movements, he became the President of AISF in its Ludhiana Conference in 1979 and remained in the post till 1985.

He joined the Communist Party of India in late sixties and remained in the Party still his last breath. He got elected to the National Council of the Party in the year 1989 at 14th Congress held in Kolkata.

He got elected to the National Executive Committee in 1992 at 15th Congress held in Hyderabad and became member of the National Secretariat in the year 1995 at 16th Congress at Delhi.  He continued that position until his last breath.

He became the General Secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha in the year 1997 at Thrissur   National Conference and got elected to the same post in the year 2001, 2006, 2010 and 2016.

He was committed to the cause of farmers. His contributions as the only farmers member of the Swaminathan Commission were noteworthy which made several recommendations including MSP to the farmers’ produce.

Com. Atul Kumar Anjaan played an outstanding role in building students’ movement, Kisan movement and building the Party across the country. He was an uncompromising fighter against right wing – fascist forces.  His demise is a great loss for the Communist Party of India and for the Kisan movement in the current situation in the country.

The party while paying respects and tributes to Com. Atul Anjaan, calls upon Party cadres and supporters to draw inspiration from his life and carry forward his legacy to fight for a new India free from all forms of exploitation and discrimination.
