From 1952 to 2019, Congress won six times from this constituency; Democratic Socialist Party once, Jan Sangh once, Janata Party once, Janata Dal four times, RJD once, BJP four times. Currently its is represented by JD(U)

Gaya parliamentary seat is reserved for Scheduled Caste. There are 10 assembly constituencies in the district. Of these, six assembly constituencies fall in Gaya parliamentary constituency. Gaya parliamentary constituency includes Gaya, Bodhgaya, Belaganj, Sherghati, Barachatti and Wazirganj constituencies.

Despite being an international destination of tourism and pilgrimage, lack of development, poverty, unemployment and problem of traffic jams in urban areas are major issues facing Gaya today.

The Gaya reserved parliamentary constituency of Bihar is all set to witness a high profile contest as a former chief minister and a former minister are facing each other in the electoral battleof of Lok Sabha elections 2024

Polling in this constituency and the Magadh region will be held on April 19 in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections.

14 candidates are in the fray after the end of withdrawal of candidature. Among them, seven independents are also trying their luck in the electoral battle. The the main electoral fight is expected between former Chief Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha leader Jitan Ram Manjhi and a former minister and RJDs’ candidate Kumar Sarvjeet. Kumar is son of former MP from Gaya Late Rajesh Kumar.

More than 18 lakh voters will decide the electoral fate of 14 candidates in this high-profile Lok Sabha constituency The seat is currently represented by JD(U) but in a seat sharing agreement in the NDA, Gaya Lok Sabha seat was  allocated to Hindustani Awam Morcha. In 2019 Vijay Manjhi was elected MP from here on JD(U) ticket.

Jitan Ram Manjhi of Hindustani Awam Morcha is trying his electoral fortune third time from this seat after losing twice in 2014 and 2019. RJD nominee Kumar Sarvjeet is currently MLA from Bodhgaya and he was agriculture minister in the previous government. Sushma Kumari from BSP is also in the fray. Several areas of this parliamentary constituency are naxal affected.

Voting will take place at naxal affected polling booths of Sherghati, Barachatti and Bodhgaya between 7 am to 4 pm.

Gaya is situated on the banks of river Falgu and is surrounded by many small mountains. It is also called the land of salvation and knowledge, because by offering tarpan in Falgu, ancestors attain salvation. Bodh Gaya is the land where Prince Siddhartha became Lord Buddha after attaining enlightenment. The economy of Gaya parliamentary constituency is based on agriculture and small trade. Area bordering Jharkhand is also Naxal affected. Naxal problem is prevalent in almost all the 24 blocks of the district except the city. A permanent battalion of CRPF is also deployed to crack down on Naxalites.

There is also an Army Officers Training Academy and an international airport here.
