In French Open Tennis, defending champion Jelena Ostapenko has made a shock first round exit from the second Grand Slam of the season in Paris. The fifth seeded Latvian was stunned by Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova, in straight sets, 5-7, 3-6.
Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams, seeded ninth, also bowed out after losing to China’s world number 91 Wang Qiang 4-6, 5-7. It is the first time in 78 Grand Slam appearances stretching back to 1997 that Venus Williams has lost successive first-round matches at a major event.
In the Men’s Singles, fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov and Kei Nishikori were among those who progressed to the second round. World number one and defending champion Rafael Nadal will start his campaign today. Yuki Bhambri is the only Indian player in Men’s Singles, while Rohan Bopanna will be figuring in Men’s Doubles.
