Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu launched the free public Wi-Fi service at the Mumbai Central Station Friday. With this inauguration, Mumbai Central has become the first ever railway station in India to have high-speed Internet facility for thousands of its passengers.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prabhu said his ministry has accorded high priority to improving passenger amenities at all railway stations. He said free Public Wi-Fi facility will be made available at 100 of the busiest stations and later on extended to 400 stations.

The Rail Wire Public Wi-Fi system will be accessible by all Wi-Fi enabled smart phones. A four digit OTP or One Time Password will be sent via SMS to users who wish to use the facility. The service has been rolled out by Indian Railway’s telecom arm, RailTel in collaboration with Google.
