A special CBI court in Lucknow has convicted a former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Central Reserve Police Force along with two CRPF personnel in a corruption case linked to irregularities in the recruitment of constables.

The CBI Court (West), Lucknow, on March 28, 2026, sentenced former DIG Vinod Kumar Sharma and CRPF personnel Satyavir Singh and Tirath Pal Chaturvedi to three years of rigorous imprisonment each. The court also imposed a total fine of ₹1.2 lakh on the convicted officials.

The case was registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 23, 2009, following source information indicating corruption in the recruitment process for Constable (General Duty) posts in the Central Reserve Police Force.

According to the investigation, Sharma allegedly conspired with private individuals and middlemen to collect illegal gratification from candidates aspiring to join the CRPF. The probe found that he shared advance details about the recruitment schedule and the number of available vacancies with intermediaries.

These middlemen then approached potential candidates and allegedly demanded large sums of money in return for assurances of selection in the recruitment process.

After completing the investigation, the CBI filed charge sheets against the accused on November 23, 2010, and July 16, 2012. Following a prolonged trial, the court found all three accused guilty and pronounced the sentence on Saturday.

The judgment brings to a close a long-running corruption case related to recruitment irregularities in one of India’s largest paramilitary forces.
